Our History
My name is Jason Brooks and "THE Jay-Crew Landscape Company" was started in 1996 out of my college house when I was 21 years old. In 1997, "THE and COMPANY" were dropped from the name as we officially became incorporated.
During my teenage years at Yorktown High School, I attempted to make money by mowing yards. Highly intrigued to learn more about landscaping, I decided to join the Players Club Golf Course staff. At the age of 16, as a maintenance worker, I picked up many side jobs from the homeowners who lived on the course. After just my second year, I had picked up enough "side jobs" to justify leaving the Players Club and work independently. While starting my bachelor's degree at Ball State University, I continued to be self-employed from March - October performing a variety of lawn and landscape maintenance services. I was pursuing a degree in accounting and realized I had been "bitten by the entrepreneurial bug." In early 1996 I decided it was time to start my company, even though I still had 2 full semesters of college left.
In March of 1996, "The Jay-Crew Landscape Company" began operations with three full-time employees - my two best friends and me. During the first season we grew to five full-time employees. Our jobs mainly consisted of mowing and light landscape maintenance services. We operated solely on a $20,000 bank loan and rented 3 garages and a VERY small office on East McGalliard Rd right here in Muncie, Indiana. With the money left over, we bought 3 walk-behind mowers, 2 small trailers, and "White Lightning." "White Lightning" was the ugliest pick-up truck you have ever seen. The truck had no reverse gear which made for some tricky parking situations at clients' properties. We were new, inexperienced, and didn't charge enough for our services, but we worked hard and had a lot of fun.
First year sales were $90,000.00 and the business was beginning to grow. Another challenge to the first season was keeping my mother's demands of finishing the last two semesters of college. So, early in the season (April, early May) and again late in the season (Aug, Sept, Oct) I had the pleasure of balancing a full-time college schedule with the demands of being a business owner. I was able to successfully manage the two and complete my college education, thanks to the encouragement of my mother.
The company stayed at the East McGalliard location for one more year. Sales grew in year two to $225,000 with only mowing and light maintenance services being offered. We sadly sold "White Lighting" at a junk yard for a grand total of $100, and upgraded to a new "used" truck.
In 1998, we were forced to change locations, and moved to a dark warehouse close to downtown Muncie. No windows, limited heat and a/c, and plenty of pigeons watching our equipment at night. Sales were OUT OF CONTROL reaching over $450,000 with mowing, maintenance, and small landscape installations only!
In 2000, we moved into the old Shakey's Pizza location on W. Kilgore Ave and made our home there for the next 6 years. Sales grew during this period to $1.1 million. As projects were becoming larger and more complex, we added a Professional Landscape Designer and irrigation services., We also completed our largest landscape project to date, Ontario Systems newly expanded campus on W. Kilgore Ave in the same year. Business was really starting to take off!
In 2006, we found an ideal location for operations located at 2901 S. Gharkey Ave. Sales are $1.2 million, and we couldn't be happier.
